German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU fell below the 5% threshold in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, losing all its seats in the state parliament.

It marks the first time in the CDU’s history in modern Germany that the party has failed to clear the threshold required to enter a regional legislature.

Merz insists he will stay on as chancellor.
