I am convinced that, given the historical conflicts that have existed, it will not be possible — and perhaps it would not even be sensible to try — to make Russia the sole loser.

That will not succeed, and it could lead to conditions within Europe, and Russia must be counted as part of Europe here, that would be bad for everyone.
