The Vatican announced Tuesday that Pope Leo XIV, 71, has been diagnosed with lung cancer after surgery confirmed lung adenocarcinoma.

Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung in a successful operation lasting about 90 minutes, with no complications reported.
