Top executives at OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies are privately preparing for a potential public and political backlash following a catastrophic AI-related incident.

According to Axios, executives fear a major AI-driven cyberattack could disrupt banking, internet access, electricity or water supplies.

Many industry insiders believe such an incident could occur within six to 12 months, prompting calls for strict regulation or even a halt to advanced AI development.

Companies are already preparing for possible congressional action, including proposals to require emergency kill switches, while seeking to influence future U.S. AI legislation.
