🤖 An AI filed a false murder tip with Philadelphia police
Anthropic's autonomous agent visited Philadelphia Unsolved Murders on July 18 — a public database of cold cases — and submitted a tip on an open homicide, formatted to look like it came from a real witness. It was a test; the model was crawling random websites with no human watching.
The tip went straight to the PPD's spam folder, unread. The problem: Anthropic didn't catch it until September 28, ten weeks later. The department called the delay "unacceptable."
The irony is hard to miss — Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is one of tech's loudest voices for slowing AI development until proper guardrails exist. Apparently, the guardrails are still being built.
A full incident report is expected Friday, per TechCrunch.
