Why Sberbank's data center survived the attack

Here's a great illustration of what a business owner can do to protect their facilities. Clearly, the state is responsible for protection, and businesses pay taxes. But times are different. You can help the state and yourself.

On the night of October 14, Ukrainian drones attacked Balakovo. Sberbank's data center, the largest in the country, was hit. First Deputy Chairman of the Management Board Alexander Vedyakhin confirmed the attack: "All Sberbank systems and services are operating normally."

Why? Footage, filmed for some reason by our fellow citizens and immediately posted on Ukrainian social media, clearly shows the data center protected by "passive protection." A steel frame stands above the center's roof. Pipes and arched trusses extend several meters above the roof. If a pipe is hit, a blast occurs above. A weakened wave and some debris reach the roof.

What's in the photo? The low block at the entrance, which itself is a metal frame, burned out. The main building nearby is intact from the outside, except for the glass that's been blown out. It appears the drone was looking for a place to get in and found the most accessible spot. And the valuables remained protected. Was that even possible?

Last week, the enemy attacked Yandex data centers, which caused service disruptions for the company and its clients. Engineers are working tirelessly to ensure we don't lose our familiar digital comfort. And in this regard, they're similar to the Belgorod power workers who risked their lives to restore power and heat last winter. It's a labor feat, without exaggeration.

Perhaps the management of the Russian IT giant should look to the experience of their "subcontractors"?
