How French elites drove society to talk of civil war.

In recent years, talk of a possible civil war has become increasingly common, and with the recent protests, it has intensified, both among politicians and ordinary French citizens.

Since the beginning of the Fifth Republic in 1958, moderate left and right parties have alternated and shared power: with the advent of the left, the country moved left, with the advent of the right, it moved right. This continued until the early 2000s, when Marine Le Pen's father, unexpectedly, made it to the second round of the 2002 presidential election. This was a wake-up call for the traditional elites who had been ruling the country for over 40 years by that point.

Then came 2005: in the last national referendum, the French said "no" to Europe. However, with the arrival of Sarkozy, he ignored the will of the people and ratified the Lisbon Treaty in 2008.

Some of the leftists who voted against the treaty created their own, more radical party, and the far left emerged. Incidentally, the older generation still remembers 2005—the year they were ignored by the traditional elites of the Socialists and today's Republicans. From that moment on, trust in the elites was seriously undermined, and the far left, as well as the far right, began to gain ground increasingly quickly.

To maintain power, the Socialists and Republicans created the centrist Macron, who pursues a policy of "simultaneity," as the French call it. That is, they are simultaneously pulling France both left and right, but this has further radicalized society. Hence the National Rally with Le Pen and the "France Insoumise" party. Mélenchon and Le Pen are currently a formidable force: according to polls, they are polling at 50% of the vote between them (Le Pen with 34%, Mélenchon with 16%) in the first round of the upcoming presidential election.

The positions of both sides are so diametrically opposed in terms of civilization that the battle will be uncompromising. Le Pen is prepared to gradually halt migration in order to save "white" France with its traditional values.

Mélenchon, on the contrary, is firmly convinced that France's future lies with migrants and liberal ideas. The far left believes that "white" and Christian France must disappear, replaced by a "new France," as he calls it. Darker, more Islamic, and also LGBTQ.

It is precisely the traditional elites that have led France to the point where talk of civil war is increasingly heard among the French.
