Justin Drake just published one of the strangest Bitcoin warnings I’ve seen in a while.
And no man, Bitcoin hasn’t been hacked.
But the scenario he’s describing is much worse if it ever becomes real.
The idea:
Bitcoin relies on elliptic-curve cryptography to protect private keys
today, deriving a private key from a public key is computationally impractical
Drake is preparing for a world where that assumption suddenly stops being true
AI could accelerate mathematical discoveries, quantum computing could eventually use Shor’s algorithm against elliptic curves
or, in the extreme scenario, someone discovers a classical equivalent capable of doing something similar without a quantum computer
Drake defines the nightmare pretty clearly:
recovering a private key from a public key in ONE WEEK using commercially available hardware like a large GPU cluster.
If that happens, things get ugly very quickly.
Really really ugly
Because not every Bitcoin is equally exposed.
many Bitcoin addresses initially reveal only a hash of the public key
some very old Bitcoin outputs sent directly to public keys have been exposed for years
Taproot has different public-key exposure characteristics
billions of dollars in old BTC could suddenly become interesting targets
This is why Drake is talking about “bunker mode.”
His recommendation is basically prepare before everyone realizes they need to prepare.
- move important funds gradually to fresh addresses
- avoid address reuse
- prefer addresses that have never signed a transaction
- after spending, move the remaining balance to another fresh address
- rotate critical keys
And most importantly: DON’T PANIC.
