The week's clearest pattern: crypto infrastructure keeps pushing toward bank-grade legitimacy, while traditional banks are cutting human roles fast in favor of AI — right as AI also showed up on the attack side, in South Korea's bank breach.

1. GCash's parent company prices its $844M IPO

Mynt, the parent of Philippine mobile wallet GCash, priced its IPO at 6.60 pesos per share, raising about $844 million in what will be one of the largest listings in Philippine history. The retail offer ran October 6–12, with shares set to start trading on October 20 under the ticker "GCASH".

2. South Korea: AI-powered hacking hits 7 banks

Seven South Korean financial institutions, including Shinhan, Kookmin, and Hana, confirmed a data breach affecting around 2,200 customer records. Regulators suspect AI tools were used in the attack and are now pushing banks to build "AI vs. AI" defenses — the first time Korean authorities have publicly tied a bank breach to AI.

3. US: Stablecoin company Rain applies for its own bank charter

Rain filed an application with the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to create Rain National Trust Bank, a New York-based national trust bank that would let it directly custody digital assets and manage stablecoin reserves and issuance, instead of relying on third-party banks. Rain becomes the 12th crypto firm seeking this kind of charter this year, amid pushback from community banks.

4. UK: HSBC plans deep job cuts in wealth management, leans into AI

HSBC is planning to cut around 70% of financial adviser roles and about half its managers and specialists in its UK wealth management division, as it shifts more client service work to AI. Affected employees are expected to leave by the end of October.

5. TOKEN2049 Singapore draws a record crowd, and major institutions

The October 7–8 conference pulled in a record 25,000 attendees from 160 countries. The standout story was traditional finance heavyweights like BlackRock, J.P. Morgan, and Nasdaq showing up for serious conversations about institutional crypto infrastructure and tokenized real-world assets, not speculative hype.
