My slightly peculiar suggestion for cultivating consistency and, honestly, the sheer motivation to keep writing is to write a fanfiction and post it after the first chapter. There is something strangely ravishing about making your work public before you've finished it. Suddenly I have given myself an obligation, however informal, to return to the page and produce the next chapter.
In this way I always find myself wanting to write and finish the chapter for the week. It necessitates maintaining some sort of weekly or monthly publishing rhythm. See it like a small pact you make with your readers, or just with yourself. I think when you've established that rhythm every comment and kudos, or little indication that someone has actually read what you've written, it can function as subtle reminder.

Okay I'll say that this method works suspiciously well for me because I have an almost pathological aversion to disappointing people. But there is also something useful about knowing that an audience exists and that someone is waiting for you. Writing can be a terribly solitary practice.

And if you are an active reader, leave a kudos. Leave a comment. Leave a little love. Those small gestures really can sustain the person on the other side of the screen trying to coax the next paragraph into existence.
