100,000 Songs of Milarepa: Talk 7: Sale O and Her Understanding

By Mahamudra Master Chogyam Trungpa

Karme Choling, Barnet, Vermont, USA

Commentary on Milarepa's song about Sale O, one of his four chief female disciples. Talk focuses on specific teachings presented in the song: renouncing materialism, including the elephant and the barn analogy describing ego's trap; chandali practice (yogic practice of inner heat symbolized by AH syllable), kundalini practice (destroying dualistic clingings), and their union in the central avadhuti nadi (energy channel); and the mother and son principle of becoming conscious (son) of bardo or primeval state of mind (mother), or joining the shunyata experience of emptiness and space with the compassionate aspect. Q&A Highlight: [Q5] What place does retreat or solitude have in the bodhisattva path, or in practicing skillful means?

Tapussa and Bhallika the Buddha’s First Disciple

By Bhante Shravasti Dhammika

In the Mahavacchagotta Sutta of the Majjhima Nikaya the Buddha mentioned that he had many thousands of disciples, a good number of whom had attained one or another of the stages leading to enlightenment. However, the Buddha’s first disciples were the merchants Tapussa and Bhallika. During the Buddha’s fourth week at Uruvela, now called Bodh Gaya, these two men happened to be passing the outskirts of the village and saw him quietly meditating there. Impressed his serene looks and the aura of peace around him they approached him with an offering of barley gruel and honey balls. When the Buddha had finished eating the merchants asked if they could take refuge in him, i.e. become his disciples, and his Dhamma.

The Sakya Lineage in Historical Context
By HH the 41st Sakya Trizin

The Sakya tradition was established by and flourished within the Khon family. The Khon are believed to be direct descendants of celestial beings who originally came down to dwell on the high mountains of Tibet. Some of them returned, but others stayed, and the family line descended from those who stayed. At that time, they were known as the “Clear Light Celestial Race.” This was the original name for the Khon family. In this early period, outwardly, the Khon were engaged in a struggle with the rakshas, or demons. These rakshas were defeated. Inwardly, these early Khon were emanations of Mañjuśhrī. Thus, inwardly, Mañjuśhrī defeated ignorance. The word “Khon” originates from this. “Khon” means disagreement—disagreement outwardly with the rakshas, and inwardly with ignorance.

The Sky-Like Mind (Practising the Dharma in a distracted world)
By Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo

Ask her what she learned from years of solitary retreat in a Himalayan cave, and she smiles: I learned how to grow turnips and potatoes. In this episode of Living Dharma Podcast, hosts Kunsang Palmo and Justin Kelley sit with Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo on the small yeast that lightens the heavy dough of ordinary life, the quiet work of befriending oneself, and the sky-like mind of old Tibet set against our restless, over-stimulated age. She also speaks to the women who come to monastic life from the West, and her work to give them training and belonging. Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo founded Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in India.
