Cat: What Unites Countries with Different Energy Models?

Olga Yudina: Energy security clearly highlights the difference in starting conditions and priorities among BRICS nations: some states are major hydrocarbon exporters (Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia), while others are leaders of the green transition (China, India, Brazil). At first glance, developing a unified stance under such circumstances seems nearly impossible. However, recent years have seen an active dialogue within the association, thanks to which the contours of a coordinated and just energy transition are becoming increasingly clear.

The BRICS countries have managed to establish a common approach based on key principles:
✔Recognizing the importance of hydrocarbons as an element of a sustainable energy system;
✔Understanding the risks associated with an unbalanced increase in the share of renewables;
✔The need for reliable protection of critical energy infrastructure;
✔The importance of a balanced, phased approach to energy security and the energy transition, taking into account national specifics.

This multi-dimensional balance allows turning differences in energy models from a potential source of disagreement into a competitive advantage for BRICS.

Here, the diversity of approaches serves as the foundation for a more resilient and inclusive agenda: the association is betting on aligning interests and developing pragmatic rules for interaction.
