Discord is rolling out a global age verification system. The rollout will take several days and cover all accounts — so sooner or later, the algorithm will decide whether you're old enough for adult content.

Funny thing is, this is already the second attempt. The first version was announced back in February: either upload a scanned document or go through facial scanning. Users politely hinted that this didn't look like privacy protection so much as biometric data collection on an industrial scale. It was especially piquant against the backdrop of a 2025 incident, when hackers stole documents from 70,000 Discord users from a third-party service the platform was using specifically for age verification in the UK and Australia. Great advertising for a system supposed to protect kids, which instead leaked adults' passports.

Now there's a softer version. According to CTO Stanislav Vishnevsky, the company "heard the feedback" and added alternative ways to verify age — without a mandatory face or document scan for absolutely everyone.

The mechanics are simple: the system assesses age on its own and sorts users into three buckets — adults (18+), teens (13–17), and "undetermined," for whom there wasn't enough data. Discord claims that more than 90% of users won't be asked to confirm anything at all — the assessment will happen unnoticed.

Teens get a trimmed-down experience: messages from strangers go into a separate folder, friend requests without mutual friends or servers come with a warning, "sensitive" images get blurred or blocked, access to age-restricted servers, channels, and bot commands is closed off, and profiles are only visible to friends and members of smaller servers.

For adults mistakenly placed into the teen or "undetermined" group, there are several ways to prove their age — meaning yes, you'll still have to explain yourself to the algorithm, just not everyone all at once.
