The 16 locks of the Kennet and Avon Canal at Caen Hill in Wiltshire were the last stretch to be completed, in 1810. They form part of the Devizes Lock Flight, which has 29 locks between Devizes and Foxhangers. Designed by John Rennie the Elder, the 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in 2 miles (72 m in 3.2 km) or a 1 in 44 gradient. It takes 5 to 6 hours to go through the locks in a boat.
