Vivian dangled her feet in the air, slowly flipping through the pages of a children’s book. Bright, cheerful illustrations kept her company in the long stretches of loneliness.

She had read the story at least twenty times, yet still returned to it, again and again.

Weird.

She couldn’t make out the text — the letters scattered across the page the moment she tried to focus, refusing to line up into words. But the pictures stayed sharp.

She traced the paper with her fingertips, following the outline of a woman, smiling back at her from the page.

The smile felt warm. Familiar. Almost like it knew her.

Then the woman’s face slowly blurred, dissolving into nothing.

Wait… what did she look like?

Vivian tried to remember, but the image slipped through her fingers, memories unraveling the harder she grasped at them.

A key jingled in the lock.

“Dad!”

She jumped to her bare feet and ran down the hall toward the doors.

The carpet shifted beneath her like loose sand, dragging at her steps, slowing her no matter how hard she tried to move forward.

The bright light ahead collapsed into darkness.

Only a single pillar of light remained, framing the man standing in the doorway.

Beyond him was nothing but pitch-black void, as if the world outside the door had vanished altogether.

The deafening silence rang in her ears.

“Hi, Vivi.”

His voice was dry. Hollow. Even with the affectionate nickname.

Yes, she remembered this one.

She wanted to ask something. Something important.

She opened her mouth—

Nothing came out.

He frowned.

Appeared right in front of her in the blink of an eye.

His heavy, calloused hand closed around her shoulder, fingers digging in like a vise.

The darkness thickened, pressing in, swallowing the edges of the room with every passing second.

“Don’t you ever dare to mention this slut.”
