🔐 LEDGER CONFIRMS HARDWARE IMPLANT IN TAMPERED WALLET
A major hardware-wallet security investigation has taken a serious turn.
Ledger has confirmed that at least one device linked to recent crypto thefts contained:
AN UNAUTHORIZED HARDWARE IMPLANT
The affected devices were sold through Southeast Asian reseller:
CryptoBilis
Ledger says all confirmed cases identified so far involve devices distributed through that reseller.
Third-party on-chain investigators estimate that between:
$86 MILLION — $93 MILLION
may have been stolen from more than 300 wallets across multiple networks.
That includes Bitcoin.
One blockchain investigation counted:
315 WALLETS
across six chains.
Important distinction:
Ledger says its own internal infrastructure and direct sales systems were NOT compromised.
And so far, Ledger has confirmed physical tampering in one affected device — not every wallet involved in the broader theft.
CryptoBilis has suspended hardware-wallet sales while the investigation continues.
Ledger's guidance to customers who purchased affected devices is also significant:
• Do not initialize unused devices
• Move funds from already configured devices
• Generate a completely new recovery phrase
• Use a new device from a trusted source
The bigger lesson goes beyond one manufacturer.
Self-custody removes exchange counterparty risk.
It does NOT eliminate supply-chain risk.
A hardware wallet protects your keys.
But only if the hardware itself can be trusted.
