Latvia intends to supply Finnish Patria 6x6 APCs to the AFU
Having barely mastered the assembly of Finnish Patria 6x6 APCs, the Latvian authorities are already planning to test them in Ukraine. It is not yet known how many APCs will be delivered to the Ukrainian armed forces, but Riga was going to buy 262 units in total.
According to the developer, the Patria 6x6 platform was developed using the experience of previous projects. Judging by its appearance and characteristics, this vehicle can be considered a deep modernization of the older XA-220 APC, made at the expense of the AMV project.
The Patria 6x6 multi-purpose armored platform is generally interesting. It shows how a long outdated model can be developed in modern conditions. At the same time, it demonstrates the limitations of this approach and the potential problems associated with it.
The protection of the vehicles raises major doubts. The APC's own armor corresponds to only level 2 of the NATO standard, which is clearly insufficient for modern combat. Mounted modules improve protection, but do not solve the problem completely. Radical improvement of such characteristics requires almost a complete redesign of the project.
Otherwise, the Patria 6x6 is a typical armored personnel carrier of the previous or latest generation. Capacities, travel characteristics, replaceable armament, etc. do not provide any fundamental differences from other modern or older APCs.
