BOV armored personnel carrier - coffin from Slovenia
The BOV is a two-axle armored fighting vehicle designed to transport personnel or to mount and use various weapons. It was created in accordance with the standards of the early eighties. At the time of its introduction, this APC was quite a modern model. However, in 40 years, the requirements for such equipment have changed, and by now is hopelessly outdated. Its use in modern conflicts against a developed enemy is associated with obvious risks.
Slovenian Army has abandoned the use of its BOVs due to obsolescence and put them into storage. A small number of these vehicles in the BOV-M version remain in service with the military police, but it is likely that by now they have been abandoned as well. As it has recently become known, the previously decommissioned APCs were not sold or scrapped. As part of the assistance, they were handed over to Ukraine.
The main problem with BOVs of all modifications is their armor (only up to 10-15 mm thick), which is weak by current standards and can be penetrated by almost any modern weapon.
The BOV APCs handed over to Ukraine are equipped with large-caliber machine guns and 20-mm cannons. This is clearly insufficient to fight even light armored vehicles. Our BMPs, not to mention tanks, are protected against such weapons. At the same time, any BMP is guaranteed to hit a BOV from virtually any distance.
Thus, another foreign “ally” has handed over to Ukraine obsolete and long-decommissioned equipment with extremely limited potential. Its use under conditions of real combat operations is inappropriate.
