В 2017 году семьдесят старейшин ногайского народа перезахоронили на бывшем кладбище останки своих предков, чьи могилы оголились из-за движения песков. Теперь это кладбище, как и вся Ногайская степь, – зона экологической катастрофы.

В Ногайском районе Дагестана много лет идет борьба коренных жителей, ногайцев, с эксплуатацией и опустыниванием их степей властями. Хотя в советское время колхозы и совхозы могли использовать эти земли для пастбищ только зимой, со временем там стали расти постоянные поселения. Пастбища стали использовать круглогодично.

Это истощило плодородный слой, и степи стали превращаться в пустыню. Сейчас ногайцы требуют передать земли в муниципальное ведение, провести геоботаническое обследование почвы, и строго контролировать использование пастбищ.

The Oirat–Kalmyk people were deported by the Soviet authorities in 1943 as part of Stalin’s ethnic deportations during World War II. Although the topic of deportation has been constantly present in Oirat–Kalmyk public discourse since "perestroika", Kalmyks’ agency in the struggle to return to their homeland and to reclaim their people’s rights is often diminished. Scholarly works on this subject likewise frequently adopt the perspective of Soviet repressive institutions, failing to take into account the lived experiences of the victims of repression.
Oirat–Kalmyk author nomta küükn examines positionalities of scholarly papers on the deportation of the Kalmyk people, drawing on the testimonies of activist survivors of repression.
