VOLGA ARCHIVE

The third project in the Volgograd Riverfront Research series explores Golodny Island as a landscape archive of the Volga territory — a place where natural systems, collective memory and minimal traces of human presence coexist outside the dense urban fabric.

Historically, the island was never densely developed. Today it remains an almost entirely natural territory occupied only by small seasonal dachas scattered through the landscape. During summer, residents of Volgograd travel there by boat to rest near the water, temporarily inhabiting the territory without fundamentally transforming it. The proposal preserves this condition and avoids large-scale urban expansion on the island.

A new public route connects the city with the island through a cable car system and a limited number of architectural interventions embedded within the landscape. Observation points, archive spaces, research programs and temporary public functions are organized around the idea of slow movement through nature.

Rather than acting as a dominant object within nature, the architecture works as a minimal infrastructural framework carefully embedded into the landscape while preserving the fragile spatial identity of the island.
