The Merchant Who Trusted the Most Generous of All

In the city of Kufa, a merchant fell into bankruptcy and accumulated enormous debts.

Overwhelmed by what he owed, he remained confined to his home, afraid to venture outside lest he encounter his creditors demanding their rightful money.

One night, his heart grew unbearably heavy, and his patience finally wore thin.

Unable to endure his confinement any longer, he slipped out under the cover of darkness and entered a mosque in the stillness of the night.

There, he turned to Allah, pouring out his heart in prayer, supplication, and humble entreaty.

With tears in his eyes, he begged his Lord to relieve his distress and enable him to repay his debts.

Meanwhile, a wealthy merchant was fast asleep.

In the depths of the night, a voice came to him in a dream:

“There is a man at this very moment who is calling upon Allah, pleading with Him to help him repay his debts. Rise at once and settle them for him!”

The wealthy merchant awoke, performed ablution, prayed two rak‘ahs, and returned to sleep.

Before long, the same call came to him again.

He rose, performed ablution, prayed once more, and went back to bed.

Yet a third time, the call awakened him, urging him to fulfill the same command.

This time, he rose without hesitation, gathered one thousand dinars, mounted his camel, and set out into the night.

He deliberately left the camel’s reins untouched, saying to himself:

“The One who commanded me in my dream to leave my home will surely guide me to the person in need.”

The camel began making its way through the city’s streets and narrow alleys, one after another, until it finally knelt before a mosque.

The merchant dismounted and entered.

Inside, he heard the heartbreaking sobs of a man weeping and imploring Allah.

Following the sound, he approached the bankrupt merchant and found him bowed in prayer, overcome with grief.

He gently addressed him:

“O servant of Allah, lift your head! Your supplication has been answered.”

He then placed the one thousand dinars in the man’s hands and said:

“Use this money to repay your debts and provide for your family. If it runs out and you still need assistance, here is my name, the location of my shop, and the address of my home. Come to me, and I will give you more.”

The bankrupt merchant replied:

“I will accept this money because I know it is a provision from Allah and a manifestation of His grace. But if I find myself in need again, I will not come to you.”

Surprised, the wealthy merchant asked:

“Then to whom will you turn when you need money again?”

The man replied:

“I will turn to the One to whom I presented my need tonight—the One who sent you to fulfill it. If I find myself in need again, I will call upon Him, for He is the Most Generous of all, and He never forgets His servants.

If my hardship continues, I will turn to Allah, who is near to me and hears my supplications. I will ask Him to fulfill my need, whether by sending you, or someone like you, to help me.

For my hope rests not in the people He sends, but in the Lord who sends them.”

■ A lesson for every troubled heart

● Sometimes, when every door seems closed, we forget that the One who holds the keys to every door has never abandoned us.

● We become consumed by our circumstances, measure our hopes by the people around us, and imagine that our relief depends entirely upon a particular person or a particular means.

● Yet true reliance upon Allah means recognizing that people are only means, while the Giver is Allah alone.

As Allah, the Exalted, says in the Holy Qur’an:

“And whoever relies upon Allah—then He is sufficient for him.”

(Surah At-Talaq, 65:3)

● Do not despair when your circumstances overwhelm you.

● Raise your hands in supplication, take the means available to you, and entrust the outcome to Allah.

● The door through which your relief arrives may surprise you; it may open through someone you have never met, an opportunity you never anticipated, or a kindness you never imagined.
