When They Wrong You, Let Your Response Please Allah
Imam Musa al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) offers a profound lesson in patience, self-restraint, and spiritual strength.
Sheikh al-Kulayni narrates the Imam’s words:
“Be patient with those who are enemies of blessings, for you cannot repay someone who disobeys Allah concerning you with anything better than obeying Allah concerning him.”
This saying transforms the way we respond to envy, injustice, and personal harm.
Some people cannot bear to see others blessed; they resent another person’s success, happiness, or peace, and may attempt to undermine what Allah has granted them.
Others misuse their own blessings through arrogance, oppression, and wrongdoing, eventually placing those blessings at risk.
As Allama al-Majlisi explains, the Imam’s words may refer to those who envy others and seek to deprive them of their blessings, or to those who become enemies of their own blessings through their unjust conduct.
But what does it mean to obey Allah concerning someone who has wronged us?
It means refusing to allow another person’s misconduct to corrupt our own character.
When someone responds to us with envy, hostility, or injustice, we must not automatically answer with hatred, cruelty, or transgression; instead, we can choose patience, forgiveness, restraint, and dignity.
Allah praises those “who restrain their anger and pardon people, and Allah loves the doers of good” (Qur’an 3:134).
This does not mean that injustice must be accepted passively or that legitimate rights should never be pursued.
Islam permits proportionate justice, provided that one does not exceed the limits.
Yet forgiveness, when exercised with wisdom and strength, remains the nobler response.
The real victory is not always defeating an adversary or forcing them to regret their actions.
Sometimes, the greatest victory is to emerge from an encounter without losing your faith, your integrity, or your inner peace.
Do not let someone else’s disobedience become the cause of your own.
Let their behaviour reveal their character, while your response reflects your relationship with Allah.
When you choose obedience over revenge and restraint over hatred, you entrust your dignity to the One who knows every injustice and never overlooks a single deed.
