Beyond Feminism and Masculinity: Justice, Dignity, and Islamic Ethics
Feminism and masculinity, as ideological labels commonly used in contemporary debates, emerged within particular Western historical and social contexts.
Yet, when imported into Muslim societies, these terms are sometimes applied indiscriminately, becoming accusations used to discredit others rather than tools for meaningful understanding.
A concept developed in one society cannot automatically be applied to another without examining its historical background, cultural assumptions, and ideological implications.
Some modern labels may also serve political or partisan interests, turning complex human relationships into confrontations between opposing camps.
From an Islamic perspective, we should approach such terminology with caution, wisdom, and intellectual discernment.
Rather than allowing imported labels to dictate our understanding of men and women, we should return to the Qur’an as our moral reference, upholding justice, dignity, and responsibility for both.
Allah declares:
“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”
(Qur’an 49:13)
Human worth is not determined by gender-based rivalry, ideological affiliation, or the ability to dominate others, but by righteousness and moral conduct.
The Qur’an also commands:
“And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.”
(Qur’an 5:8)
This principle requires us to avoid unfair generalizations, hostile accusations, and the humiliation of others, whether men or women.
Ultimately, our responsibility is not to defend labels, but to uphold truth, justice, and Islamic values.
We should be especially careful not to violate the dignity of a fellow believer, regardless of gender.
“And speak to people good words.”
(Qur’an 2:83)
A society rooted in faith does not need ideological hostility to protect the rights of men and women.
It needs justice, mutual respect, sound judgment, and a sincere commitment to the ethical teachings of Islam.
