The Divine Project and the Struggle Against Tyranny

Across history, the encounter between the divine project and tyrannical agendas has never been merely a contest for political power.

In the Islamic understanding, the mission of the prophets and the Ahl al-Bayt was to preserve human dignity, truth, justice, and moral consciousness in the face of forces that sought to reduce religion to an instrument of authority.

This struggle could therefore become political, military, intellectual, and cultural at the same time.

The story of Prophet Yahya, or John the Baptist, and the tragedy of Imam al-Hussain (AS) illustrate this deeper dimension.

Their struggles were not simply attempts to seize a throne.

They represented resistance to moral corruption and the distortion of divine values.

When power becomes detached from justice, preserving truth itself can become an act of resistance.

Tyrannical systems do not rely exclusively on weapons; they can also weaken societies by cultivating Jahl (ignorance), distorting facts, normalising falsehood, and encouraging moral decay.

Jahl, in this sense, is more than a lack of information; it is a condition in which people lose the ability to distinguish truth from deception and justice from injustice.

Once collective basira (awareness/insight) is weakened, oppression can become easier to sustain.

This is why knowledge and basira, or spiritual discernment, occupy such an important place in the teachings associated with the Ahl al-Bayt.

Knowledge is not merely the accumulation of information; it is the capacity to recognise reality, question manipulation, resist deception, and act according to conscience.

Against the darkness of ignorance, awareness becomes a form of protection.

The lessons of Karbala extend this struggle beyond the battlefield; Imam Ali al-Hussain’s sacrifice exposed the moral stakes of confronting injustice, while Sayyeda Zainab and Imam al-Sajjad carried the message beyond Karbala, challenging attempts to control the narrative surrounding the tragedy.

Their role demonstrated that preserving truth also requires preserving memory, testimony, and public consciousness.

The same questions remain relevant in a transformed environment.

Modern societies possess unprecedented access to information, yet information itself can be manipulated through media, propaganda, selective narratives, and ideological warfare.

The struggle therefore continues not simply through armies, but through the shaping of perception.

The enduring lesson is vigilance: believers are called to cultivate knowledge, piety, discernment, and moral courage.

The challenge is not merely to recognise oppression when it appears, but to preserve the inner clarity that prevents falsehood from becoming normal.
