Building a Righteous Family: An Islamic Vision of Marriage

In the Islamic worldview, marriage is far more than the fulfilment of biological or emotional desires; it is a sacred institution through which human beings participate in the fulfilment of God’s purpose on earth:

— Reforming life,
— Nurturing faith,
— and Raising a righteous generation capable of carrying the responsibility of stewardship.

The Qur’an describes the marital relationship as a source of tranquility:

“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from yourselves so that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy”
(Qur’an 30:21).

Thus, the family should become a sanctuary in which physical needs are recognised, but spiritual and moral formation remain central.

While the physical dimension may constitute a limited part of family life, the greater concern must be the cultivation of faith, character, responsibility, and ethical values.

A successful marriage rests upon three essential pillars:

■ The first is shared humanity; neither spouse should approach the other with arrogance or a sense of superiority.

Marriage requires humility, cooperation, and a willingness to help one another become better rather than constantly judging one another.

■ The second pillar is tranquility and emotional security; a home cannot flourish when it is dominated by tension, suspicion, and hostility.

Forgiveness and overlooking one another’s shortcomings are essential. The Qur’an teaches:

“Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?”
(Qur’an 24:22).

■ The third pillar is affection and mercy; genuine love is expressed through giving, consideration, and protecting the other’s feelings—not through keeping accounts of who gave more.

The Qur’anic pairing of mawaddah and rahmah reveals that lasting marriage requires both emotional affection and compassionate care.

● Modern individualism and social media present additional challenges; couples may compare their ordinary lives with carefully edited images of other people’s relationships, homes, and happiness, creating dissatisfaction with blessings they once appreciated.

The Qur’an reminds us:

“Do not wish for what Allah has given some of you over others”
(Qur’an 4:32).

Ultimately, marriage is a process of building. It requires patience, gradual adjustment, forgiveness, and perseverance.

With time, husband and wife become part of each other’s formation, learning how to grow together.

A righteous family is therefore not a perfect family, but one that continually strives, through faith, patience, mercy, and mutual responsibility, to become worthy of the trust God has placed within it.
