It’s time to tell you the story behind the name of our Unity!
So… Why Babel Unity?
Approximately a month before the launch of our community, the two founders, Dasha and Polina, conceived this project. We were thinking, “How can we make the name of our community memorable, meaningful, engaging, and informative?” Because our community is based on historical, diplomatic, and socio-economic values, we remembered the story of the Tower of Babel!
The story of its construction, given in Genesis 11:1–9, appears to be an attempt to explain the existence of diverse human languages. According to Genesis, the Babylonians wanted to make a name for themselves by building a mighty city and a tower “with its top in the heavens.” God disrupted the work by confusing the language of the workers so that they could no longer understand one another. The city was never completed, and the people were dispersed over the face of the earth.
Considering the idea behind our Speaking Club, we realized that the chosen name would narrate the idea we champion: the idea of unification through discussion, through studying English as a foreign language.
English is now the number one language, the most commonly used in diplomacy, international relations, and finding global solutions. So, it’s a kind of solution to the problem of the Tower of Babel: people found a way and created a “common” language so everyone could understand each other.
And what about our logo?
It’s a schematic picture of the Tower of Babel! You can also see the logo as similar to a staircase, reminding you that as you grapple with the discussion topics, you take more and more steps that bring you higher and higher toward achieving your goals!
