The format of reading, just like that of listening, hardly changes throughout the years. The clarity of preparation requirements and the consistency of task types have made it easier for students to score high points in this part. 🙂
Many final-stage winners and prize-winners give themselves wiggle room in the Use of English tasks. Yet failing the reading part is rarely an option.
🍓 This is why it is essential to maximise your ability to complete reading tasks correctly
This can be achieved by addressing

The reading part is counted as a single block with the listening part. Together, they are worth 40 points.
📜 The tasks are all based on existing language exams, such as IELTS, CAE, and CPE. Thus, solving tasks from the books devoted to these tests is highly beneficial and should be done alongside solving the past papers.
Here is a list of task types and their language-exam origins:
🎂 Multiple choice - the task requires you to answer several questions about the text by choosing one of the four responses provided. The questions follow the content of the text progressively.
💕Where? They are very common in the municipal stage, especially in Moscow, and are a staple of the final stage. At least 5 questions in the reading section are multiple-choice.
💕Where from? CAE (for the municipal stage) and CPE (for the final stage) Reading Parts 1 and 3. Also, this task type is often present in some IELTS Reading texts.
🎂 Multiple matching - requires you to match the letters assigned to each of the mini-texts in the exercise to several statements provided before or after the texts.
💕Where? A typical regional stage task, 15 statements for matching letters to.
💕Where from? CAE Reading Part 4, if you want to prepare strictly for the regional stage. CPE Reading Part 4 also works, but it requires you to imply meaning from the text more, while in CAE, you have to search for specific evidence.
🎂 Gapped text - a torture of a reading task that requires you to place missing paragraphs in the text, "filling" the gaps. The lacking chunks are provided below the article with the gaps.
💕Where? Although task makers don't usually include this type of task in the variants, I've seen a couple of these in some municipal stages. Plus, we consistently solved these in the Moscow Region team.
💕Where from? CAE/CPE Reading Part 2.
🎂 IELTS-style tasks - these ones include matching paragraph headings, filling in words in a summary of a part of the text, true/false/not stated (or not given), short versions of multiple matching and multiple choice, etc.
💕Where? In the Moscow Region team, we would focus mostly on IELTS tasks several months prior to the final stage. The final stage reading conventionally includes 5 T/F/NS questions, 5 multiple choice questions, and 5 words that you need to transform to fill in the gaps in the main text. Also, some regions use IELTS-style tasks in their municipal stage variants.
💕Where from? IELTS exam, pretty much any reading task. I'd also recommend solving the CPE Use of English Part 3 exercises to improve your word formation skills.
