🤩 Being able to properly complete the speaking part is utterly important in ВсОШ. After all, this portion of the test is worth 20 points and is present in the municipal, regional and final stages of this competition.
🤩 The responses should be clear and devoid of grammatical, lexical, and pronunciation mistakes. You should also be able to respond to two questions from your opponent regarding the content of your presentation.
☕️ And yes, of course, the Olympiad speaking task is far from a real-world conversation in English. Your answer should be tailored very closely to the requirements, which are given below:
The Procedure:
🤩 Prep Time
First, you'll have 15 minutes to prepare for your talk. The actual test will take approximately 10 minutes. You can take notes using the fact file that you'll be provided with in the prep room. You'll only be able to take your notes with you to the exam room, as the fact file will stay in the prep room.
Here is what you should pay attention to:
✨See the main task sheet before referring to the fact file.
✨Write the following sentence down:
"Hello, dear members of our ... Club"
(depends on what is given in the task.)
✨Note down the type of your talk (a presentation, a tour, a speech, etc). Be specific about this - the jurors might mark you down for calling something that's supposed to be a tour a presentation.
✨Write down what you'll be talking about (the topic).
✨Make sure to mention what the purpose of your talk is (for example, to persuade your club members to ...)
Then, you'll be paired up with another contestant, and you'll proceed to the examination room.
❗️ The Talk
🩶Make sure to greet the jurors politely.
🩶One of the jurors will start with an ice-breaker addressed to each of the contestants. This part is NOT graded.
🩶If you are student 1, you'll be the first to begin your talk.
🩶Be mindful of the time limit (3-4 minutes).
🩶If you make a mistake, don't hesitate to stop and correct yourself. After all, even natives make slip-ups in their conversations. However, making too many corrections will affect your score.
🩶Avoid reading from the notes. The jurors can mark you down for this.
🩶Be confident, or at least fake it till you make it.
🩶Face your opponent, make it look like you enjoy engaging with them.
🩶Make sure to end the talk with:
"Now I've neared the end of my talk (presentation, etc). If you have any questions, feel free to ask them."
🙈 The Questions
✨Your opponent will ask you two questions.
✨Don't panic if you don't get the question. You can politely ask the opponent to repeat it.
✨Make sure that your responses are grammatically correct.
✨Try to use the info from your notes or from what was originally written in the fact file. As you won't have it with you in the exam room, try to recall that information.
✨If you don't know/remember the answer to the question, don't panic - you can give a plausible answer that sounds true. As long as you don't say something crazy, the jurors won't mark you down.
✨Avoid saying "I'll look this up on the Internet and let you know later" - this used to be a viable answer, but currently, the jurors mark people down for this.
✨Thank the opponent for their questions.
🌟 The Opponent's Talk
🩶 Please! Don't get overly relaxed! You'll still need to ask them a couple of questions based on their speech.
🙈 The Questions to the Opponent
✨Thank the speaker for their talk.
✨Don't ask for the information that they've already mentioned in their speech. You can get marked down for this.
✨Thank the opponent for their replies.
