Essays
An essay is a type of writing that puts forth a specific opinion regarding a particular problem and provides argumentation to back it up.
Essays are always written in the formal register: no colloquialisms or slang, no contractions, no use of "I". Make use of impersonal constructions, passive voice, inversion, modals, and conditionals.
An essay should have:
🤩 A title.
🤩 An introduction, where you outline the overall topic/problem and present your thesis/point of view.
🤩 Main body para 1 - gives argumentation and evidence for your thesis.
🤩 Main body para 2 - explains another argument to back your opinion.*
🤩 A conclusion, where you briefly restate your position and mention your arguments.
*Technically, adding one more para won't be a crime, but make sure that you still fit in the word limit
Here is an example of an essay that I wrote. It is based on an IELTS task 2:
With the rise in popularity of the Internet, newspapers will soon become a thing of the past.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Newspapers vs the Internet
💐Introduction:
I believe that printed newspapers and magazines will inexorably become obsolete. Instead of visiting a nearby stationery shop or post office, the vast majority of people will simply access their electronic gadgets and find the latest news on the World Wide Web. In fact, many journals have already begun the digitalisation of their content, sending newsletters to their subscribers and providing them with urgent up-to-date information, which the readers avail themselves of while they are enjoying their morning coffee. Yet what are the reasons for newspapers becoming inadequate in our modern-day society?
💚provides the main stance on the issue
💚gives some background info on the topic
💐 Main body para 1:
The first reason is that reading the latest news from a portable electronic device is simpler than buying a newspaper. People can easily avoid collecting litter by not purchasing the sheets of paper that are so gratuitously large and messy. In addition, informational websites can be revised, and the newest amendments to the available articles can be seen right away. Yet buying newspapers does not provide such an opportunity to those who are so abjectly conventional.
💚gives the first set of arguments in support of the thesis (economic benefit)
💐 Main body para 2:
The second reason is the negative ecological implications of printing newspapers. Millions of trees have to be felled in order to satisfy the needs of the more conservative. By using electronic gadgets to obtain new information we save a plethora of forest plants and protect the fragile ecological systems around the world.
💚gives the first set of arguments in support of the thesis (ecological benefit)
💐 Conclusion:
In the end, I would like to state that very soon newspapers will give way to informational websites, and not only will the benefits yielded from this change satisfy our impulsive desires, but they will also have a long-term effect, which can arguably save our planet from climate change.
💚restates the chief claim
💚briefly reiterates the main arguments
