Reviews
Reviews are aimed at persuading people to check out a book/movie or visit a place/event. It should contain your own opinion about the features of whatever you're reviewing.
You should write in the semi-formal register. Make use of rhetorical questions, personal pronouns, emotive and descriptive vocabulary, and idioms.
A review should include:
🎀 A title.
🐇 An introduction - hook the reader with sensory details or rhetoric questions. Provide the reader with some general impressions.
🎧 1st body para - broadly contextualize whatever you're reviewing. You should briefly outline the plot if you're reviewing a book/movie (without spoilers).
☁ 2nd and 3rd body paras - balance some positive and negative opinions. You could speak about the cozy atmosphere of the cafe or the boring description paragraphs in a novel.
🍦 A conclusion - round up the points made in the text. End with a final recommendation.
Here is my review of a Christmas Apple commercial that you can refer to.
Fuzzy Feelings
🤩 Introduction:
Although the notion of an imperfect Christmas has been hanging about for quite a long time, there is no other holiday commercial like ‘Fuzzy Feelings’ that evokes the feeling of bitter-sweet empathy towards its peculiar characters. So, if you’re weary of the cloying Christmas carols, ostentatious front lawn decorations and endless Secret Santas at your office, you’d certainly opt for something less cliched, something like ‘Fuzzy Feelings’.
🌸shows why the short film might be appealing
🌸addresses the reader
🌸adds relatable details
🤩 1st body para:
The story follows a creative young woman, who uses her splendid stop-motion animation skills to cope with a difficult boss. I’d like to highlight the unconventional combination of the top-notch filming done by Apple and the slightly odd choice of details. For example, the main character enjoys making zany cartoons about the misadventures of a grumpy, star-crossed fluffy little fellow despite being a sensible, grown adult.
🌸outlines the plot
🌸gives a positive feature
🤩 2nd body para:
It’s important to mention that the company decided to deviate from the typical representation of Christmas, making the characters flawed in a believable way. The fact that formal urbanised life is debilitating genuine connections, if not annihilating them, is a ubiquitous phenomenon nowadays, which is of course illustrated in the heartwarming plot of this adorable, unelaborate story.
🌸gives some more positive features
🤩 Conclusion:
All in all, I’d say that ‘Fuzzy Feelings’ is a short film that everyone should consider viewing. The laconic and comforting plot will stir your emotions and make you beam at the simplicity and eccentricity of the characters and their overcoming their fictional problems.
🌸addresses the reader again
🌸reiterates why the short film might be interesting
