Reports
Reports are pieces of clear, formal writing aimed at outlining and analysing a particular situation/problem, as well as giving recommendations for improvement. 🍵
You should use the formal register to write a report. This means that you should avoid using personal pronouns (I, you, we, etc.) and substitute them with nouns (students/the community/respondents) or by using "one" (a generic subject). Don't use contractions (don't -> do not). You can make use of such formal structures as inversion, formal phrasal verbs, passive voice, complex and compound sentences, modal verbs, impersonal constructions and formal linkers. Be very logical, precise and structure the text very clearly.
A report should include:
🌟 *A title (Technically, this is optional. You can just title your report as "A Report")
🌟 An introduction - include what you're trying to achieve by writing the report ("The aim of this report is..."). You can briefly summarise the situation the report will be describing and the sources from which you got the data.
🌟 A main body section - can be separated into smaller sections (advantages/disadvantages, for example). You can reference the data that you've been provided with.
🌟 A conclusion and recommendations part - in the recommendations section, you'll have to provide the readers with a definite course of action to improve the current problem/situation. You can add a conclusion, which recapitulates the major inferences you made while writing the report.
Here is a practice report I wrote while preparing for the regional stage of ВсОШ. Feel free to refer to it.
A Report
🌟 Introduction:
The aim of this report is to get the school authorities acquainted with the quality of the food served in the canteen and to suggest some recommendations to make the menu more suitable for students and teachers. The Student Council has recently conducted a survey, collecting data and assessing the quality of the dishes.
💛states the aim of the report
💛gives the source of the information
🌟 Positive and Negative Aspects:
From the perspective of the Student Council, the food examined cannot be considered healthy, because a portion of the meals is served with a large amount of sugar. The canteen simply shifts the problem of not being able to receive more fruit to adding sugar to every dessert they produce. It is crucial to point out that health problems in students and teachers might ensue as a result of excessive sugar consumption.
Although the canteen has some issues regarding the desserts served there, other aspects of the menu seem promising. For instance, the salads and side dishes contain relatively large amounts of vegetables, which is necessary for supplying the students and the teachers with an adequate amount of vitamins and fibre.
💛is separated into the negative and positive aspects
💛analyses the collected data
🌟 Recommendations and Conclusion:
I believe that the school administration should not be passive about the problems in the canteen. First of all, it would benefit from more fruit deliveries. Fresh fruits should be used in desserts more, as the natural glucose will substitute the unhealthy granulated sugar. Another recommendation is that some posters with educational information about nutrition should be hung around the canteen. This way, the students will comprehend the importance of eating healthy food and the positive effect it can have on their bodies. If the given recommendations are implemented, the existing problems will be solved.
To conclude, the school canteen cooks use too much granulated sugar in desserts. Unless this issue is addressed promptly, the visitors might suffer from serious health problems.
💛gives two recommendations as to how the problem can be solved
💛recapitulates the inferences
