Jefferson Lewis was on the run before locals tracked him down and attacked him, with police arriving shortly after to take him into custody.

Police used pepper spray to control crowds outside Alice Springs Hospital where he was being treated. He was later airlifted to Darwin under guard for his safety.

A 41-year-old alleged Hells Angels member has been charged after police say he falsely claimed to be part of Australia’s elite Special Air Service (SAS), a top-tier military unit.

He allegedly told people he served alongside Ben Roberts-Smith, but authorities say he has no record of ever serving in the ADF.

He’s been granted bail after appearing in court, with the case ongoing.
