#miniarticle | Good Thoughts, Bad ThoughtsHave you ever had a strange or disturbing thought and immediately wondered,
“Why did I just think that?”The truth is,
thoughts are not always a reflection of who we are.
Unwanted thoughts can appear suddenly and may be completely inconsistent with our values, beliefs, or intentions. Having a disturbing thought does not mean we agree with it, want it, or are going to act on it.
The Stoic philosophers offered an interesting way of looking at this. They believed that we cannot always control the thoughts or impressions that first enter our minds. What we can control is
how we respond to them.
A thought can simply be noticed and allowed to pass.
You don’t have to analyse every thought.
You don’t have to fight every negative idea.
And you certainly don’t have to feel guilty for something your mind happened to produce.
