When Too Much Comfort Holds Us Back
We often think that the best way to help someone who is struggling is to make them feel better immediately. But sometimes, too much comfort can send an unintended message: “You can’t handle this without me.”
A Psychology Today article by Claire Lerner describes how constant reassurance and one-on-one attention can actually prevent children from adapting to unfamiliar situations.
The goal isn’t to ignore someone’s distress. It’s to support them without taking the struggle away from them.
Instead of saying, “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen,” a more empowering message is:
“I know this is difficult. And I know you can get through it.”
Because confidence doesn’t come from never struggling.
It comes from struggling, adapting, and discovering that you were capable all along.
