“Freedom of religion is at stake. A new bill proposed by Teal MP Allegra Spender is a direct attack on Christian schools and their ability to choose staff who uphold the Christian faith and to build a school culture predicated on Christian values.
Allegra Spender says the bill will remove “discrimination based on sexuality, gender or marital status at religious schools”.
But what would this mean in practice for schools seeking to uphold their religious convictions?
Christian schools will face restrictions on their ability to hire only staff who adhere to the Christian teaching that sexual activity is only permitted within a monogamous heterosexual marriage.
In other words, they will no longer be allowed to employ only faithful Christians. Schools will also no longer be free to teach a Biblical understanding of marriage as the union of a man and a woman.”
