Playlists of many people include Afro music, but few know the history of this genre and who made the world take notice of it.

In 1960s Nigeria, Fela Kuti created the Afrobeat, a mix of jazz, funk, and African rhythms with sharp political lyrics. It was a protest music.

In the early 2000s, a new generation transformed it into Afrobeats (with an “s”), adding hip-hop, dancehall and electronic elements. Politics was no longer the focus — only dance and life remained.

For many years the genre stayed local, but in 2016, Drake’s track ”One Dance” featuring Nigerian artist WizKid literally exploded global charts. Today, Afrobeats is a genre that creates a vibrant vibe and energizes you to the max!

Have you noticed how in foreign movies and TV shows characters suddenly drop the word «Period» at the end of a sentence? And no, they're not talking about punctuation.

Long story short: it's our version of «And that’s final!» But with an extra dose of confidence and attitude.

🤔 How does it work in real life?
This word is used when your opinion is final, not up for debate, and you're not about to prove anything to anyone.

For example:
☕️ «This coffee is the best in the world. Period.»

🏠 «I'm staying home tonight, and that's on period!»

Why do people sometimes write «Periodt»?
A "t" sound is often added at the end for extra emphasis. It sounds more emotional and shows that you're in the know when it comes to slang.

How did you end up joining ARIS? Tell us about your experience
— During my freshman year, I didn't plan on joining any organizations - I wanted to focus on my studies first and then look into other options starting in my second year. But my roommate beat me to it: she told me about ARIS’s activities, and I decided to give it a try after all. That’s how my journey with the association began.

What is your biggest achievement in the association that you’re proud of?
— I’m in my second year now and have already become the head of the design department. For me, this is a major achievement because leading the department means being responsible not only for myself but also for the other students. I have to find the right approach for everyone, help them, explain things, support them, and share my experience. I’m proud that I can be useful to the team and teach them new things.

An interesting fact about yourself
— I’m studying Design. Many people consciously choose this profession as adults, but my dream of becoming a designer began when I was just five. So, my dream is already 15 years old.

What’s the most ridiculous thing that has ever happened to you at an ARIS event?
— I wouldn’t call this situation ridiculous, but rather sweet and amusing. At the Spring Mastership School, the head of the Media Center was talking about the design department, showing my work, and meant to say “beautiful design,” but accidentally said “beautiful designer.” It was very nice to receive a compliment both for myself and my work.

Finish this sentence: “Being an active member of ARIS is like…”
…being in a Van Gogh painting. Each brushstrokes come together to form a complete picture. It’s the same with the association: a multitude of different, vibrant, and unique individuals come together to create a beautiful picture called «ARIS»

Zodiac sign and any other information
— My zodiac sign is Aries. They say Aries are hot-headed and emotional. Perhaps that’s what influences me at work. In life, I’m a pretty calm person, but when it comes to work, I show all my energy and always finish what I started - even if it means being stubborn as a mule sometimes ♈

Как ты попала в АРИС? Расскажи о своём опыте
— На первом курсе я не планировала вступать в какие-либо организации — хотела сначала влиться в учёбу, а уже со второго курса присмотреться к чему-то ещё. Но меня опередила соседка: она рассказала о деятельности АРИС, и я всё-таки решила попробовать. Так начался мой путь в ассоциации.

Твоё главное достижение в ассоциации, которым ты гордишься?
— Сейчас я на втором курсе и уже стала главой блока дизайна. Для меня это большое достижение, потому что руководить блоком — значит отвечать не только за себя, но и за других ребят. Нужно находить подход к каждому, помогать, объяснять, поддерживать и делиться опытом. Я горжусь тем, что могу быть полезной команде и учить новому.

Интересный факт о себе:
— Я учусь на направлении «Дизайн». Многие приходят к этой профессии осознанно уже во взрослом возрасте, а моя мечта стать дизайнером появилась ещё в пять лет. Получается, моей мечте уже 15 лет.

Самый нелепый случай, который случился с тобой на мероприятии АРИС?
— Эту ситуацию я бы назвала не нелепой, а скорее милой и забавной. На весенней школе актива глава медиацентра рассказывала о блоке дизайна, показывала мои работы и хотела сказать «красивый дизайн», но случайно сказала «красивый дизайнер». Было очень приятно получить комплимент и себе, и своим работам.

…оказаться на картине Ван Гога. Отдельные цветные мазки вместе образуют целостное изображение. Так и в АРИС: множество разных, ярких и индивидуальных людей складываются в прекрасную картину под названием «АРИС».

— Мой знак зодиака — Овен. Говорят, Овны вспыльчивые и эмоциональные. Возможно, именно это влияет на меня в работе. В жизни я довольно спокойный человек, но в деле проявляю всю свою активность и всегда иду до конца — даже если иногда приходится быть упрямой, как баран ♈

Tell us about your journey in association. How did you end up here and what has changed since then?
— My journey in ARIS started in 2021. Since then I've tried myself almost in every part of it. And because of this I can call myself an «oldie» of the association. Now I'm the head of the Media Center. With my team we create content, capture the brightest moments of the events and tell stories about people in ARIS.

Many things has changed since then: atmosphere, people, formats of the events. But the main thing remained the same: for me personally ARIS has always been something more than just an association 💕

What does ARIS mean for you in one sentence?
— ARIS is a place where people from around the world become one big family.

An interesting and unusual fact about you
— I can play violin and I’m also a teacher in FEFU.

The shortest but most effective advice you can give an international student: what to do first?
— The first thing is to watch beautiful sunsets in Vladivostok, the second is not being afraid of making friends, asking questions and fully taking advantage of your student life.

If your activity in the association was a dish, which one would it be?
— Beshbarmak — warm, filling, and uniting. Because ARIS is a place where different people bond together and create something that is truly precious.

Your zodiac sign and maybe some more interesting information
Aries ♈️ In work I'm insistent and always get the things done. My main rule is to not be afraid of expressing myself and trying new things!

Расскажи про свой путь в ассоциации. Как ты оказалась здесь и что поменялось с тех пор?
— Мой путь в АРИС начался в 2021 году. За это время я успела попробовать себя практически во всех блоках, поэтому с улыбкой могу назвать себя «старичком» ассоциации. Сейчас я являюсь главой Медиацентра — вместе с командой мы создаём контент, сохраняем самые яркие моменты мероприятий и рассказываем истории людей АРИС.

С тех пор изменилось многое: атмосфера, люди, форматы мероприятий. Но главное осталось неизменным — для меня АРИС всегда был чем-то большим, чем просто организация 💕

Что значит для тебя АРИС одним предложением?
— АРИС — это место, где люди из разных уголков мира становятся одной большой семьёй.

Интересный, необычный факт о себе:
— Я играю на скрипке и являюсь преподавателем в ДВФУ.

Твой самый короткий, но эффективный совет новому иностранному студенту: что делать в первую очередь?
— Сначала обязательно посмотрите на красивые закаты Владивостока, а затем не бойтесь знакомиться, задавать вопросы и пользоваться всеми возможностями студенческой жизни.

Если бы твоя работа в ассоциации была блюдом, то каким?
— Бешбармак — тёплый, насыщенный и объединяющий. Как и АРИС: разные люди собираются вместе и создают что-то по-настоящему ценное.

— Овен ♈ В работе проявляю настойчивость и всегда иду до конца. И мой главный принцип — не бояться проявлять себя и пробовать новое!

How did you end up joining ARIS? Tell us about your experience
— I joined ARIS in my first year of my Bachelor’s degree in 2021 through the Mastership School. At first, it was difficult to balance studies and public activities, so I became truly active in my second year, starting with ISUD, where I volunteered at the concert and with the Mari El delegation. Since then, my involvement has only grown.

What is your main achievement in the association that you’re proud of?
— My main achievement is becoming the head of the Russian Speaking Club. I fell in love with it as a participant because of its warm, friendly atmosphere and openness. Later, I became an organizer and then the head of the club. For me, this project combines everything I love: meeting people from different cultures, discussing interesting topics, and helping international students learn Russian. We welcome everyone as our guests 🐻

Interesting fact about you:
— I collect postcards from different countries and cities, both old and modern. I love giving and receiving them. If I enter a postcard shop, there’s a high chance I’ll leave with a whole stack — I just can’t stop.

What is the most ridiculous occasion that happened to you during an ARIS event?
— I’m not sure it was the most ridiculous one, but it was definitely memorable. During ISUD 2024, I was the head of the volunteer team, and I was urgently asked to find people to move a table for the award ceremony. All volunteers were busy, I got overwhelmed and started crying. In the end, I asked people waiting in line for the concert. Nearby, the fair host and his friend kindly helped me and asked with a smile: «Are you really upset because of a table?». Now I remember it with a smile — it was a good lesson that help can come from unexpected places.

— Being an active member of ARIS is like travelling around the world and collecting not souvenirs, but meanings: your luggage fills with people, stories, and experiences that quietly but forever change you from within.

— I’m a Gemini both by zodiac sign and ascendant. It seems like the perfect combination for public activities: communicative, active, and energetic.

Как ты попала в АРИС? Расскажи о своём опыте
— В АРИС я пришла на первом курсе бакалавриата в 2021 году через Школу актива. Сначала было непросто совмещать учёбу и общественную деятельность, поэтому активно включилась со второго курса — начиная с ДМСЕ, где была волонтёром концерта и делегации Марий Эл. С этого момента моя вовлечённость только росла.

Какое твоё главное достижение в ассоциации, которым ты гордишься?
— Моё главное достижение — стать руководителем Русского разговорного клуба. Я полюбила его ещё как участница за тёплую атмосферу и открытость. Позже стала организатором, а затем руководителем. Для меня это проект про общение, интересные темы и помощь иностранным студентам в изучении русского языка. Всех ждём у нас в гостях 🐻

Интересный факт о себе:
— Я коллекционирую почтовые открытки — из разных стран и городов, старые и современные. Очень люблю их дарить и получать. Если захожу в магазин с открытками, редко ухожу без покупки.

Самый нелепый случай, который случился с тобой на мероприятии АРИС?
— На ДМСЕ 2024 я была руководителем волонтёрского корпуса, и меня срочно попросили найти людей, чтобы перенести стол для награждения. Все волонтёры были заняты, я переволновалась и расплакалась. В итоге попросила помощи у людей из очереди на концерт — они с улыбкой помогли. Сейчас вспоминаю это как хороший урок: помощь иногда приходит откуда не ждёшь.
