I was at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo, where a group of elementary school children were visiting with their teacher.
The children were all wearing the same uniform, holding hands in a winding line, silent as the grave, with only their eyes darting around.
Each had a water bottle and a lunchbox sticking out of the same pocket.
Whenever the teacher explained an exhibit, they gathered into a semicircle without being told, and you could see in their eyes that they were devouring every spoonful of information.
No questions, everyone completely focused, just their brains at work processing the information.
When I walked between them, they immediately stepped aside and bowed out of respect for someone older.
Paris, the Gallery of Evolution, a roughly similar group of children, all dressed in whatever, about three-quarters of them of African descent.
It was a complete fucking shitshow: they couldn’t care less about anything in the museum, screaming, running around, jumping, and throwing random shit - a zoo.
I approached their teacher and asked why she wasn’t telling them to behave, since they weren’t learning anything themselves and were disturbing all the other visitors.
She replied, “There’s no point.”
