🇺🇸 California just drew some new lines around AI
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of AI-related measures on September 30, covering everything from workplace surveillance to healthcare, deepfakes and gene synthesis.
One of the more unusual parts: California is officially sticking with the name “Artificial Intelligence.”
Under the new rules, employers can’t use AI systems to read or predict workers’ emotions, or collect neural data through workplace sensors. Companies also can’t rely solely on AI to discipline or fire employees, and workers must be told when AI plays a role in certain layoffs, relocations or terminations.
The rules go beyond the workplace. Doctors must retain their own judgment when using clinical AI tools, protections against AI-generated deepfakes and misuse of someone’s likeness are being strengthened, and gene-synthesis companies will have to verify customers and screen genetic material they produce.
