🤖 One Claude Code command reportedly wiped 48,000+ files

An AI coding agent reportedly went from rebuilding a project to destroying it in just 103 seconds.

According to the incident report, Claude Code generated a Python cleanup script to remove an old project copy. The problem was that the Windows directory contained junctions pointing back to the live working directory.

The script failed to recognize those links correctly and began treating the real project files as disposable.

In total, 48,218 files were reportedly deleted. The damage also reached the Git repository, including .git/objects, refs, and logs, making normal Git-based recovery impossible.

Claude Code’s rewind/checkpoint system may not restore everything if the destructive changes were executed through Bash or PowerShell.
