❗️OpenAI faces questions over ChatGPT activity flagged before Tumbler Ridge shooting

OpenAI is facing a lawsuit in California over a ChatGPT account that was flagged months before the February 2026 Tumbler Ridge shooting in British Columbia.

The attack on Feb. 10 killed 8 people, including 5 children and an educator, and wounded 27 others.

According to OpenAI, its systems detected suspicious activity on the account in June 2025. Human reviewers investigated and ultimately banned the account for violating its rules.

But they did not alert police.

At the time, OpenAI’s policy required activity to meet a threshold of “credible and imminent” planning before a law-enforcement referral was made.

That standard has since changed.

On Feb. 26, OpenAI told Canadian officials that it had broadened its referral criteria and added mental-health and behavioral experts to help assess difficult cases.

The company also said that under its updated protocol, it would refer the same account to law enforcement if it were discovered today.
