๐ก Gene Therapy Restores Vision in Dogs With Inherited Blindness
Scientists at Michigan State University restored vision in whippets with an inherited eye disease using a single injection.
Some of these dogs carry a rare mutation in the CaBP4 gene that disrupts the transmission of signals from light-sensitive cells in the retina to the brain. The dogs have congenital vision impairment and become almost completely blind as they age.
โ๏ธ The researchers treated adult dogs by injecting a working copy of the gene into their eyes, allowing retinal cells to resume transmitting signals to the brain.
The team initially hoped the treatment would stop the disease from progressing, but the results exceeded their expectations. In adult dogs, retinal connections were restored, abnormally thin retinal layers returned to normal, and new synapses formed.
Scientists had long believed that retinal cells in adult mammals could not regenerate neural connections, but the experiment suggests otherwise. Mutations iโฆ
