๐ฐ OpenAI Wanted to Sell AGI to Russia or China
In 2017, OpenAI co-founder and main backer Elon Musk was distancing himself from the company, and the other founders began thinking about a new source of funding. Two of them, Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, wanted to organize an "international coalition" to develop AI, journalist Kevin Roose writes in his new book, "The AGI Chronicles."
But the idea soon turned into an auction: the governments of the U.S., China, Russia, and other countries would fund OpenAI in exchange for rights to its future technology.
Dario Amodei, then a researcher at OpenAI who later left the company and became head of its main competitor, Anthropic, opposed the idea. OpenAI confirmed that the idea of turning the company into an international project was briefly discussed, but said selling AGI to China or Russia was never considered at all.
