PhD and Postdoctoral programs at Liverpool university with Professor Michelle Henning:

The project researches the new paradigm of photography embedded in contemporary mobile phone cameras and promoted as “AI-assisted” since 2024. It examines the extractive image processing involved in AI image making, asking what ways of seeing the world are being normalised via the integration of generative AI into mobile phone cameras.

Both programs will involve some creative practice as well as writing/research. They will have an emphasis on critical AI studies and photography/ visual AI. They will help to research the publicity and affordances of current mobile phone cameras, drawing on the latest theoretical and critical work in machine vision and critical AI studies, and using creative and experimental research methods.

It will suit people with an arts / culture background, a good degree of technical knowledge in image making, an experimental and creative mindset and a strong interest in critical approaches to AI imaging.

Dear friends and colleagues, we are happy to announce that the cfp for APP 2026 is out!

The topic of this year's conference is Photography's Other Archives — we would like to focus upon photographic archives (counter-archives?) that have been overlooked, not included, for various reasons be it geographic, political, historiographical or epistemological.

We aim to bring together not only researchers but also practitioners in various fields, involved in discovering, studying, describing, preserving or destroying, transforming, digitizing, publishing or hiding photographic archives — we welcome artists, restorers, grassroot and professional archivists, museum custodians, community managers, genealogists, et c, alongside academic researchers. We are open to experimental formats of participation, as well as traditional paper presentations. As usual, the conference will include APP+, the workshop/think tank for emerging researchers.

The conference will be held in person at the European University in St Petersburg, 3-6 December.
Deadline for submissions is 20 September.

Дорогие друзья и коллеги, приглашение к участию в "После (пост)фотографии" этого года — готово!

В этот раз нашей темой становится фотоархив и всевозможные инициативы — по его сохранению, выявлению, преобразованию, осмыслению. И в первую очередь нас интересуют не крупные, известные архивы, а то, что остаётся "по краям": то, что по каким-то причинам не попадает в музей или национальный архив, или находится на их задворках, или не "помещается" в категории фотографии, традиционно сохраняемые.

Мы ждём не только исследователей, но и практиков из самых разных профессиональных областей, соприкасающихся с фотоархивами: активистов низовых архивных инициатив, хранителей, спасателей забытых архивов, специалистов генеалогического поиска, фотографов, художников и кураторов, осмысливающих архив, коллекционеров, программистов. Мы открыты к инновационным и экспериментальным форматам участия, а не только докладам.

The last couple of days have been a blast!

The "After Post-Photography 10: What Is Photography Becoming?" conference (November 6–8) was yet another successful project for us and our colleagues. Thanks to its vibrant program, engaging activities and incredible people, the event was a huge success.

It was an honor to host the 10th annual APP conference! We extend our deepest gratitude to the APP team, the YCIE team, the speakers and presenters, CSN lab, Varpet, and everyone who participated and helped make this event happen.
