🇨🇩 Frontline workers in DRC receive Ervebo vaccine amid growing Ebola outbreak
Health care and other frontline workers received the Ervebo vaccine on Friday in Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo as authorities respond to the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak. The vaccine, previously effective against the Zaire strain, is being used under a compassionate-use programme against the Bundibugyo virus, which has no licensed vaccine or treatment. As of Wednesday, the Health Ministry had recorded 9,066 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths.
The outbreak is concentrated in Ituri province and has been described as the deadliest of Congo’s 17 Ebola outbreaks. The World Health Organization said in August that 70,000 doses of Ervebo had been approved for use in Congo, including 50,000 for frontline and health workers and 20,000 for a clinical trial.
