🇲🇺 Mauritius extends curfew after riots leave 94 arrested

Mauritius has extended an overnight curfew until Friday morning after the island’s worst riots in decades, triggered by protests over water shortages and the high cost of living that turned violent on Friday when police shot and wounded a woman at a roadblock. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced the measure after unrest involving looting, arson, damage to police stations, traffic lights and CCTV, while seven police officers were injured and at least 94 people, including 16 minors, were arrested.

The officer involved in the shooting has been arrested and remanded in custody, though the circumstances remain unclear. The government said schools would remain closed on Thursday and Friday and warned that detainees could face prosecution under prevention of terrorism laws.
