🇪🇹 UN chief warns against escalation after renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on 10 October he was gravely concerned by renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia and warned against further escalation. The statement follows reports of fresh clashes in the country’s north, where conflict previously involved federal forces, regional fighters and allied militias.

The UN called for restraint and urged the parties to protect civilians and pursue efforts to prevent a wider deterioration in security. Northern Ethiopia was the scene of a devastating war that began in November 2020 and formally ended with a truce signed in November 2022.
