🩸 History As Story Of Violence

For Du Maistre, History was not a story of progress, but the story of violence becoming more universal, more destructive, and ever more violent.

The great illusion of the Enlightenment, in Maistre’s eyes, was that it sacralized violence under the name of progress and liberty and thus perpetuated what he already knew: violence, not liberty, not equality, was the spirit of life.

So Progress was really the tearing down of all the barriers erected by humans to try and prevent each other from tearing one another limb from limb. The end result of this was the mass washing of human blood of the last 300 years.

The Dog of Flanders (1997)

If you were a kid in the 90's you might remember this animated film on VHS. Thank god I didn't watch it then or else it could depress the hell out of me.

Beautifully drawn, very humane, might bring tears to your eyes.

“The concept of “mental health” in our society is defined largely by the extent to which an individual behaves in accord with the needs of the system and does so without showing signs of stress.”

Nymphs Dancing to Pan’s Flute
Joseph Tomanek
(1889-1974)

In this luminous and dreamlike painting, Joseph Tomanek captures a scene pulled from the heart of ancient myth: a circle of nymphs, barefoot, bare-skinned, and wild, dancing in ecstatic reverie around a blazing fire, guided by the unseen but ever-present tune of Pan’s flute.

Aesthetica "The Necessity of Chivalry" essay (Only 4 pages long) is a good read. Highly recommended. Modern morality, Lewis claims, has become utilitarian and equalizing in ways that flatten distinctions of honor, loyalty, and nobility of spirit. Chivalry is not merely…

"Our culture has filled our heads but emptied our hearts, stuffed our wallets but starved our wonder. It has fed our thirst for facts but not for meaning or mystery. It produces "nice" people, not heroes."
