These two words get used interchangeably, but they describe different stages of the same process.

Payment is the business flow: a buyer decides to purchase, gets authorization, sends a payment instruction, and receives a confirmation. The money may not have moved yet.

Settlement is what happens later, when the actual transfer of value happens between accounts—bank transfers, card-network clearing, or on-chain finality.

Conflating them is how products break: refunds miss windows, fraud checks evaluate the wrong state, accounting closes don't match.
