Five Academy in Exile Fellowships
 
Academy in Exile is pleased to announce its 2025 fellowship program funded by the Mellon Foundation. AiE invites scholars at risk to apply for five fellowships (12 months each) at TU Dortmund University and the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) Essen. Eligible are scholars from any country who have a PhD in the humanities, social sciences, or law, and who are at risk because of their academic work and/or civic engagement in human rights, democracy, and the pursuit of academic freedom.

The position is based at IOS and will begin on 1 April 2025 at the earliest. Applications are welcome from individuals who have defended their PhD thesis within the last three years (allowance will be made for care responsiblities). Suitable candidates should further the broader strategic objective of the ScienceCampus, to strengthen knowledge of interconnections, relations and comparisons between regions of the Americas and Europe, while also contributing the the thematic focus areas of the platform.

В научной и преподавательской деятельности есть известная проблема: чем выше ты поднимаешься, тем меньше позиций, стипендий и возможностей. Если ты хочешь уехать из России и Беларуси и при этом ты аспирант или молодой постдок (то есть только защитился), то на академическом рынке полно вкусных предложений. А вот если тебе плюс-минус 40, диссер написан, скажем, 12 лет назад, вот тут начинаются проблемы - таких мест просто меньше.

Вдруг вы не знаете. Академическая юность - это когда ты еще получаешь постдоки. Их можно получать несколько, но все отграничивается временем защиты диссертации. Часики-то тикают. В разных странах по разному, где-то это 3-4 года после защиты диссера, где-то до 10 лет после защиты. Причем ситуация усугубляется тем, что в РФ обычно заставляют быстро защититься (и это плюс-минус 25 лет), чтобы потом преподавать, а, например, в США многие растягивают специально время написания диссертации (потому что потом придется выходить на рынок, а это сложно), да и вообще писать диссер 5-7 лет - это норма.

И получается, что вот, например, я, защитивши диссер в 26 лет, оказываюсь в эмиграции и через более чем 10 лет после защиты не могу получать больше постдоки.

Набор до 1 августа, участие в школе бесплатно. Читать там будет много хороших людей, в том числе замечательный историк литературы Андрей Зорин (я горжусь тем, что я у него училась) и биолог и научный журналист Ася Казанцева.

One Doctoral Researcher Position in Russian Literature

The “Modernizing Empires: Enlightenment, Nationalist Vanguards and Non-Western Literary Modernities” (NONWESTLIT) Project, funded by the European Research Council, will hire one fully funded doctoral researcher with living allowance in 19th century Russian literature and culture.

The project is a comparative study of cultural reforms, linguistic renewal and literary renaissance movements in three imperial traditions, Russia, Turkey and Japan. The project is hosted by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LILEC) at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna).

Doctoral Position

The financing body: the European Research Council for the project StG 950513 NONWESTLIT, “Modernizing Empires: Enlightenment, Nationalist Vanguards and Non-Western Literary Modernities”

The student profile:

- MA in Literary Studies, Russian Studies a related field in literary or cultural studies.

- Languages: excellent command of English and Russian (preferably, native or near-native Russian fluency) is required, familiarity with 19th century Russian orthography a plus. The interview will be mainly in English, the level of knowledge of Russian will also be assessed. Knowledge of Italian is not required for applying for the position, but the candidate is expected to develop their skills in Italian in the first year.

- Research Theme: The ERC project is a comparative study of cultural reforms, linguistic renewal and literary renaissance movements in three imperial traditions, Russia, Ottoman Turkey and Japan. The candidate is expected to work on the nineteenth century literature and culture in Russia in a comparative perspective within the scope of the research project. They will have co-responsibility in the collection of data and their analysis, and in research administration. For their applications, they will produce an original proposal that falls within the scope of the project. The proposal may focus on one of the following: 19th century Russian periodicals and print culture, 19th century Russian fiction, questions of translation in the same period in Russia.

OPEN CALL for applications: Visiting Fellows program in Vienna

The Dialogue Office for Civil Society Cooperation in Vienna welcomes applications for a visiting fellowship for a period of one month between July and December 2024.This program offers you an opportunity to spend one month in Vienna, working on your own project in a comfortable atmosphere, as well as being acquainted with Austrian initiatives.

We welcome anyone engaged in anti-war and decolonial activism, gender rights, who is currently working on their project and capable of organizing an event. The project can take any form, from a scientific article or translation, to a theatrical performance or art object.

The Dialogue office for Civil Society Cooperation is an Austrian non-profit organization promoting democracy and human rights, sustainable development, non-discrimination, as well as integration and peace across Europe. Through thematic events, partnerships with other civil society organizations and initiatives, publications, and public discussions, we provide a space for exchange and community building of civic organizations and engaged like-minded people. The Dialogue office stands for innovative formats, science-based political education and networked approaches.

What we offer:

• The duration of the fellowship is one month;
• Fellows will receive a stipend (2500 euro) to cover travel costs, accommodation, living expenses, health insurance, and any incidentals related to their stay in Vienna;
• The Dialogue Office for Civil Society Cooperation provides the fellows with office space in the center of Vienna.

What we expect:

• You are an activist, researcher, artist, cultural practitioner, or journalist who holds Belarussian, Ukrainian, Russian or Polish citizenship (residency not required);
• You work on projects that offer a decolonial perspective on history, politics, society, and ecology, and/or study authoritarian systems, resistance, and issues of gender equality;
• You as a Visiting Fellow spend the duration of your fellowship in Vienna, Austria;
• You will organize a small event (workshop, reading, lecture, or other forms) at the Dialogue Office for Civil Society Cooperation office during your stay in Vienna;
• Please tell us if you have a Schengen Visa or will need assistance getting it.

The [critical infrastructure lab](https://www.criticalinfralab.net/) at the University of Amsterdam offers a fully funded four-year PhD position and a fully funded two-year postdoc position.

In the project, we will examine the structuration of internet infrastructure with a particular emphasis on the research-policy-implementation pipeline of communication controls. Through this work, we hope to find different infrastructural ideologies in the communications networks of the EU, Russia, and China.

At the critical infrastructure lab, we are dedicated to researching power and contestation in transnational communication infrastructures. Our ultimate goal is to foster the development of alternative infrastructural futures that prioritize people and planet over profit and capital.

The Martin Roth Initiative has announced a call for applications for “Temporary Relocation to Germany for Artists and Cultural Actors at Risk 2024.” The initiative allows for artists and cultural actors at risk to temporarily relocate to Germany with the assistance of a host cultural institution.

The program provides a scholarship to applicants for up to 15 months. The Martin Roth Initiative also assists with the relocation visa process and provides applicants with psychosocial support, language courses, trainings, and networking activities.

Applications for the program must be submitted by host organizations. Host organizations can be cultural institutions or collectives (museums, theaters, festivals, etc.) and other socially relevant organizations that are based in Germany.

Applications are due on April 15, 2024.
